Welcome to the Pheromone Group website !

Olfaction - the sense of smell - is the common denominator to all the work done in the Pheromone Group.

Our research aims towards understanding the mechanisms and functions of olfaction in insect ecology.
Pheromones are species-specific chemicals used for communication between individuals of the same species.
Apart from pheromones, we also study the behavioural function of other odours, such as host plant and food source volatiles.
The physiological regulation of olfaction is another important aspect of our work.

The research covers a broad spectrum, from molecular level to behaviour and practical use:

  • EVOLUTION: evolutionary pathways of pheromone communication

  • MOLECULAR ASPECTS: binding proteins and receptors in insect olfaction

  • BEHAVIOUR: the role of odours in mating, oviposition and host/food choice

  • APPLIED ASPECTS: mating disruption and monitoring in the field
